Journal of Instrumental Analysis was founded in 1982. Its Editor-in-Chief is Academician Guibin Jiang. The journal is jointly sponsored by the China National Analytical Center, Guangzhou and the China Association for Instrumental Analysis, under the supervision of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences. It is recognized as a China Premium Science and Technology Journal, a Core Journal of China, and a Source Journal for Chinese Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations. The journal publishes new theories, methods, techniques, and instruments in analytical science, covering mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, chromatography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and electrochemistry. It features fundamental, innovative, and applied research in environmental science, food science, the life sciences, medicine and pharmaceuticals, materials, textiles, and related interdisciplinary fields, highlighting research frontiers and topics of current interest in China and internationally. Its sections include Scientific Papers, Experimental Techniques and Methods, Reviews, Instrument Development and Applications, etc.

The journal is covered by Chinese and international databases and indexing services, including Scopus, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS, USA), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) database, Abstracts Journal (AJ, Russia), the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD), A Guide to the Core Journals of China, the Chinese Academic Journals Comprehensive Evaluation Database (CAJCED), the list of Source Journals for Chinese Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations, the China Premium Science and Technology Journals Database, etc. In 2021, it was selected for the first cohort of the Guangdong High-Level Science and Technology Journal Development Program.

The journal has received numerous distinctions, including China Premium Science and Technology Journal (2023, 2020, and 2017), Guangdong Brand Journal (2023 and 2018), Guangdong Premium Science and Technology Journal (2024, 2021, 2017, and 2015), Chinese Academic Journal with Excellent International Impact (2012), and Guangdong Outstanding Science and Technology Journal awards (2010, 2001, 1996, and 1992). Its 2025 Scopus CiteScore is 1.3.

The journal is published monthly on the 15th and distributed in China and internationally. Its identifiers are ISSN 1004-4957 and CN 44-1318/TH. The print edition uses a large 16mo format and costs CNY 60.00 per issue or CNY 720 per year. Subscriptions are available through post offices throughout China. Readers unable to subscribe through a post office may order directly from the Editorial Office.
