Determination of Elemental Impurities in Synthetic Colorants by ICP-MS
An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) method was established to detect the content of Class 1 elemental impurities(arsenic(As),cadmium(Cd),mercury(Hg),and lead(Pb)),and Class 2A elemental impurities(cobalt(Co),nickel(Ni),and vanadium(V)) in synthetic colorants(Tartrazine,Brilliant Bule,Erythrosine) according to ICH Q3D. The sample was digested by microwave digestion. The results showed that the linear correlation coefficients(
r

) of all elemental impurities were greater than 0.999 in the range of 0-100 µg/L,with the exception of Hg, whose linear range was 0-5 µg/L. The detection limits(LODs) ranged from 0.002 to 0.015 mg/kg. The recoveries were within the range of 90.0%-110%,with relative standard deviations(RSDs) less than 5.0%. The method is highly sensitive and accurate,and is suitable for the control of Class 1 and Class 2A elemental impurities in synthetic colorants,
with the low residual risk of Class 1 and Class 2A elemental impurities in commercially available synthetic colorants.
