An analytical method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction technique followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was developed for the determination of hydroquinone in sediment samples. The operating conditions of the extraction process including the solvent type, the power of ultrasound and the extraction time were optimized. The result indicated that, under the optimal conditions, the recoveries of hydroquinone ranged from 85% to 92% with relative standard deviations of 3.0%-7.2%.The calibration curve for hydroquinone was linear within the range of 0.05-10 mg/L.The detection limits for hydroquinone were 12.88 ng/g.This method was rapid, simple and sensitive, and was suitable for the rapid determination of hydroquinone in sediment samples.
