The structural research and composition analysis of carbohydrates play important roles in disclosing their biological functions.Meanwhile,the derivation analysis is an efficient approach for the qualitative and quantitative detection of carbohydrates with high sensitivity.This paper reviewed a derivative method using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone（PMP） as reagent,which is mild,sensitive and highly selective,and is widely used in the analysis of monosaccharide composition,degree of polymerization，degree of substitute,disaccharides isomers ,as well as relative quantitation and structural identification of O-and N-glycans.
